6000 Series Aluminum Alloy: Key Properties & Specifications
1. Chemical Composition
6000 series alloys are magnesium-silicon based (Mg: 0.4–1.5%, Si: 0.2–1.8%) with additions of copper, chromium, and manganese.
Grade | Aluminum (%) | Magnesium (Mg) (%) | Silicon (Si) (%) | Copper (Cu) (%) | Chromium (Cr) (%) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
6061 | Bal. | 0.8–1.2 | 0.4–0.8 | 0.15–0.40 | 0.04–0.35 |
6063 | Bal. | 0.45–0.9 | 0.2–0.6 | ≤0.10 | ≤0.10 |
6082 | Bal. | 0.6–1.2 | 0.7–1.3 | ≤0.10 | ≤0.25 |
6101 | Bal. | 0.30–0.6 | 0.3–0.7 | ≤0.05 | ≤0.03 |
Trace elements (Fe, Zn, Ti) vary by grade. Request full material datasheets for details.
2. Physical & Mechanical Properties
Density : 2.70–2.80 g/cm³ Melting Range : 580–650°C Tensile Strength : 130–310 MPa (T4 temper) / 240–370 MPa (T6 temper) Yield Strength : 110–275 MPa (T4) / 215–330 MPa (T6) Elongation : 8–18% (dependent on temper) Thermal Conductivity : 160–220 W/m·K
3. Performance Advantages
Heat Treatable : Enhanced strength via artificial aging (T6 temper). Corrosion Resistance : Excellent for marine and outdoor applications. Machinability : Suitable for CNC milling, drilling, and threading. Weldability : Compatible with TIG, MIG, and friction-stir welding methods.
