Monel 403 Alloy | High-Resistivity Nickel-Copper Alloy Manufacturer & Supplier
Supplied by Huaxiao-Alloy – Your Trusted Global Alloy Partner
1. Product Overview
Monel 403 Alloy is a specialized nickel-copper alloy engineered for superior corrosion resistance, high strength, and exceptional electrical resistivity. As part of the Monel family (which includes grades 400, 404, and 406), Monel 403 bridges the gap between mechanical strength and electrical performance, making it suitable for both industrial and electronic applications.
At Huaxiao-Alloy, we manufacture and export Monel 403 alloy in a complete range of product forms — pipes, tubes, plates, sheets, bars, wires, and custom fittings — strictly according to ASTM B164 / B165 / UNS N04403 / DIN 2.436 and equivalent international standards.
Its unique nickel-copper composition (around 63% Ni and 30% Cu) delivers superior resistance to seawater, saline atmospheres, acids, and alkalis, while its stable electrical properties make it highly desirable for resistors, heating elements, and control components.
2. Chemical Composition (Typical %)
| Element | Nickel (Ni) | Copper (Cu) | Iron (Fe) | Manganese (Mn) | Carbon (C) | Silicon (Si) | Sulfur (S) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Content (%) | 63.0 min | 28.0–34.0 | 2.5 max | 2.0 max | 0.15 max | 0.5 max | 0.02 max |
Nickel and copper form the base of Monel 403, ensuring outstanding corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability. The minor elements (Fe, Mn, Si, C, S) are carefully controlled to enhance machinability and thermal stability.

7. Typical Applications
Industrial Applications
Marine engineering: Pump shafts, condenser tubes, seawater valves, and piping systems.
Chemical processing: Acid piping, reaction vessels, evaporators.
Oil & gas: Tubing, fittings, valves for offshore and downhole service.
Power generation: Cooling systems, heat exchangers, and condensers.
Electrical & Electronic Applications
Heating elements and resistors requiring stable resistance over temperature range.
Thermocouple connectors and control units.
Instrumentation and sensor housings used in harsh environments.
Resistance wire and contact parts where non-magnetic, corrosion-proof behavior is essential.
8. Electrical Properties
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Electrical Resistivity | 49–52 µΩ·cm |
| Thermal Conductivity | 22 W/m·K |
| Seebeck Coefficient | 2.5 µV/°C |
| Curie Temperature | Non-magnetic |
These values make Monel 403 particularly suitable for precision resistors and heating wire elements requiring stable performance under varying thermal conditions.
9. Fabrication & Welding Guidelines
Forming:
Monel 403 can be cold-formed easily using conventional methods. For heavy forming, intermediate annealing is recommended to restore ductility.
Machining:
Due to its tendency to work-harden, machining should be performed at low speeds and high feed rates, using sharp tools and generous coolant.
Welding:
Preferred filler: Monel 60 or ENiCu-7 electrode.
Recommended methods: TIG, MIG, or resistance welding.
Preheating: Not required; post-weld annealing optional.
Produces clean, corrosion-resistant weld joints.
Heat Treatment:
Annealing at 870°C (1600°F) followed by air cooling restores corrosion resistance and ductility.
10. Corrosion Resistance
Monel 403 exhibits outstanding resistance to:
Seawater and brine
Hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids
Alkaline and neutral salt solutions
Organic acids (e.g., acetic, formic)
Stress corrosion cracking and erosion
High-velocity seawater cavitation
It performs better than standard stainless steels in chloride-rich and saline environments, which is why it’s widely used in marine and chemical processing plants.
